Many of my illustrations start with a wash of solvent/pigment based markers to serve as an underpainting. Next I use colored pencils or graphite to fine-tune the details and achieve the right texture. Sometimes I do the final touches in Photoshop with my Wacom tablet.
My Book FLAP YOUR HANDS was drawn digitally with colored pencil brushes, primarily in five colors, (cyan, magenta, yellow, red and navy blue) which I overlapped with hatching to create an infinite spectrum of colors.
My favorite medium of the moment is the Posca pen, as it frees me from my tendency to overwork and overthink my art.
Panel 1: Friend (dog) greets Stimmy Kitty: “How are doing?” “Oh the usual…”
2: “Every day is an obstacle course of loud noises, bright lights, emotion, confusing social situations and injustice, which I’m forever cursed to carry around in a volatile storm cloud above my head.”
3: Awkward silence. Storm cloud has lightning bolts and a rainbow.
4: “I mean... I’m fine.” Friend is relieved. “Oh, good!”
Watch this space for new art throughout the month of October!
This year I’m participating in #ABLArtfest and creating daily drawings based on their list of prompts! To keep things interesting, I’m also combining prompts from #scbwiArtober2023 and #Peachtober for some of the pieces.
Each of these daily illustrations was drawn with Posca pens on small sheets of Bristol board.
